Valentine-Inspired Wedding Cakes by Ron Ben-Israel
As pastry chef and owner of Ron Ben-Israel Cakes, one of the world’s finest couture cake studios, Ron Ben-Israel designs celebration cakes that are hand-delivered to destinations throughout the continental U.S. and abroad. Regularly called the Manolo Blahnik of cakes, and now, the Sweet Genius of television, Ron started his confectionery adventures after a 15-year career as a professional modern dancer. Upon retiring from performing with companies spanning three continents, he incorporated his fine art training, military background {yes, really} and ballet regime into the discipline of pastry arts. Flour and sugar became his artistic medium with tremendous results…
After Ron arrived in New York City, his stylish wedding cakes were discovered by Martha Stewart while on display in the windows of Mikimoto on Fifth Avenue. In 1999 he established his intimate all-white bakery studio in Manhattan’s fashionable SoHo neighborhood. A favorite of fashion editors, stylish socialites and sophisticated wedding planners, Ron Ben-Israel is a master of lifelike vibrant floral reproductions in butter and sugar. So real looking it’s hard to believe the lovely petals, leaves and branches are not the real thing! Painstakingly molded and hand-painted, each bloom is carefully created with the precision Ron is known for on his Food Network television show, Sweet Genius. Perfection is not over-rated.
Quite the opposite from his downright intense television persona, when it comes to wedding cake design, Ron begins the artistic journey with a warm, one-on-one consultation with the bride. Through his charm and passion for all things confectionery, that cake consultation will more than likely reveal its inspirations in the style of the bride’s a wedding gown, an heirloom diamond necklace, a favorite flower, or a classic piece of art.
At one point, it was his topsy turvy wedding cakes filled with sugar flowers, that every bride HAD TO HAVE. They’re still feverishly requested, but when you see all of his classically, elegant confections it’s simply impossible to choose. But know this, not one of his cakes is a duplicate of another. Each is unique and a piece of art all its own. Whether precariously balanced, precisely stacked, crowned with perfectly composed floral details or architecturally inspired… each Ron Ben-Israel wedding cake is impressively crafted and unquestionably delicious.
