{THE BRIDAL CIRCLE}: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN CAKE DESIGN?
{BRONWEN WEBER}: I started working in my first bakery when I was fourteen years old. It was love at first bite. I could not imagine myself doing anything else then or now. I have always wanted to do this for a living. I am very lucky to have known from early on what I wanted to do, and I am blessed to still wake up everyday eager to get to it. It is my career, my passion, and much of my life, all by choice.
WHY DID YOU BECOME A CAKE DESIGNER?
Cake makes people happy. It is that simple. Cake is part of everyone’s best days, birthdays, weddings, and celebrations of all kinds; I get to be part of that, too.
WHEN DID YOU JOIN FROSTED ART?
I worked for the previous chef in my early in my career, and then returned when he retired about 8 years ago. In a way, I have come full circle.
WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN STYLE?
What would you like it to be? Dark and gothic? Sure! Simple and elegant? No problem. Crazy and fun? Love it. Vintage and classic? Certainly.
WHAT’S YOUR PHILOSOPHY WITH RESPECT TO DESIGN; SIMPLE AND ELEGANT OR OVER THE TOP?
In my opinion, there is no such thing as over the top. Just the top, and I will continue to aim for it. The right design is whatever makes the bride smile.
WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION?
Inspiration can come from anywhere. Jewelry, fashion, stationary, china, wallpaper, the carpet, chandeliers, an era, an artist, an architect, my mom, your mom?
WHAT CAKE DESIGN EXPERIENCE CAN A BRIDE EXPECT WHEN WORKING WITH YOU?
I will draw you pictures until you smile. When you come in for a design session, I will try to decipher your style and see if together, we can come up with something that is right for you and your event.
WHAT ARE THE TOP 3 QUESTIONS A BRIDE SHOULD ASK A CAKE DESIGNER DURING HER RESEARCH?
How big is a serving? Can I have whatever flavor I want? Will a cake decorator be delivering the cake?
WHERE IS THE FURTHEST PLACE YOU HAVE SHIPPED A CAKE?
We ship small cakes, but wedding cakes we hand deliver all over the country. A favorite trip was to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Fun, sun, and frosting!
ARE YOU AVAILABLE TO BRIDES OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES WHO WANT YOUR CAKE?
Have my passport and spatulas, and the bags are packed. Just need a bride who wants a cool cake!
WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR WORKING WITH OUT OF STATE AND INTERNATIONAL BRIDES?
It takes a bit of planning, but it can be done. Email us and we would be happy to figure out the logistics.
FAVORITE WEDDING CAKE, AND WHY?
I cannot cake and tell. But the next one looks pretty fun.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE WEDDING FLAVOR?
Today it is raspberry petit four. Tomorrow it might be orange, cardamom and rose water. I don’t commit. How could I?
ANY WORDS TO LIVE BY FOR A NEWLY ENGAGED COUPLE?
Be more concerned with what you like than what you think your guests will like. You can’t make everyone happy, so you should make yourself happy happy happy!
WHAT CAKE TRENDS CAN BRIDES EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU?
Delicious guts, pretty outsides. Texture is really big right now and I LOVE it!
YOU MAKE DESSERT FOR A LIVING, BUT WHAT’S YOUR ONE FAVORITE INDULGENCE?
I would not be able to pick just one. I am in the indulgence business after all. I even named a cake flavor ‘vice’ after a few of our favorites– butter, bourbon chocolate and coffee. I do love those…
IF NOT IN YOUR EXISTING PROFESSION, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?
Well, I am not sure, but I would probably be dressed in a bikini, as I might be able to fit in one without all this cake temptation around.
TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT NOBODY WOULD EVER GUESS.
I love Korean food so much, that there are always at least two kinds and five pounds of kimchi in my fridge at all times. It is a super food after all.
WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL?
I love Hawaii. I love the laid back lifestyle, the food, and the friendly people there.
WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE FOR FROSTED ART BAKERY?
What’s ahead for Frosted Art? More fun, giant cakes, and lots and lots of laughter. We are a small family of jokesters who like sugar but take our cake very seriously.
