Ron Ben-Israel Gets Crystallized with $14,000 Worth of Swarovski Jewels

RON BEN-ISRAEL, host of Sweet Genius and the mastermind behind Ron Ben-Israel Cakes in New York City, recently shared the story behind this fabulous wedding cake design with us.

As an artist whose favorite medium is confection, Ron is regularly commissioned to design cakes as art installations for media events, product launches and  the like. In some of these installations the whole cake might not be edible as it’s used in partnership to display another item. Like, fabulous jewels and decadent accessories.

Known for creating the finest couture cakes, it comes as no surprise that Swarovski commissioned Ron to create a luxurious crystal-encrusted cake to showcase the launch of a book entitled “Crystallized.” Now, when we say crystal-encrusted, we actually mean that Ron and his talented team of designers spent COUNTLESS hours carefully placing $14,000 worth of Swarovski crystals on each glamorous tier!  Just look at the details on this cake… exquisite!

“The best part was being able to go to the showroom and grab fistfuls of crystals. The company even made special combinations for us, as I wanted to have the crystals mimic stamens and floral centers. This had to be made in Austria and shipped to us for the design,” says Ron Ben-Israel

How’s that for a little wedding cake inspiration? Just imagine how gorgeous your wedding cake would be if designed in a similar fashion! It’s possible. Yet, one must be realistic. The same amount of lovely, shimmering crystals can be used just not on the cake. Keeping in mind that normally every single inch of a Ron Ben-Israel wedding cake is edible, when these types of artistic collaborations come into play the cake was not intended to be eaten.

In real life, Ron would create risers, platforms, and supports that would be adorned with crystals to achieve this same elaborate design concept. In other words, the jewels would be separate from the edible cake tiers. Why? Because Ron always wants to make sure there is no risk for the guests!  We know first hand that Ron’s cakes are just as spectacular on the inside as they are on the outside. They’re meant to be savored!

The re-design also gives the bride and groom the opportunity to save the crystallized riser as a keepsake for years of wedding anniversaries to come. After all, with $14,000 worth of crystals it would be nice to have them after the wedding!

Don’t you agree?
